Contrary to its name Ringworm is not a worm at all but a fungus called Dermatophytes. Dermaphtytes means 'plants that live on the skin'. In the past, because of the circular lesions made by the fungi they were thought to be caused by worms, hence the name ringworm.
Ringworm is a skin disease caused by a fungus (plural: fungi). Because the lesions are often circular, it was once thought to be caused by a worm curling up in the tissue. However, there is no truth to that; it has nothing to do with a worm.
Ringworm derives its name from the classic red, round "worm like" lesion seen on human skin that is infected. It is not a worm though; it is a fungus that is spread from animals to humans.
Ringworm infections are caused by a fungus. Fungi (plural of fungus) that cause ringworm live and multiply on the upper layer of the skin and on the hair. Ringworm is not caused by a worm or other parasite.
