Ringworm is the common name for the skin infection caused by a special group of fungi; it is not caused by a worm at all. The fungi feed upon the dead cells of skin and hair causing, in people, a classic round, red lesion with a ring of scale around the edges and normal recovering skin in the center. Because the ring of irritated, itchy skin looked like a worm, the infection was erroneously named. The fungi responsible are called dermatophytes, meaning plants that live on the skin; ... the more correct term for ringworm is dermatophytosis. The characteristic ring appearance is primarily a human phenomenon. In animals, ringworm frequently looks like a dry, grey, scaly patch but can also mimic any other skin lesion and have any appearance.

Ringworm is a very common skin problem which can be observed in many people. It doesn't even leave children. Initially you will observe a small red spot like a pimple but within a couple of days it increases in size. Along with size, the itching sensation ... increases. Ringworm is caused by an infection of the hair and surface layers of the skin by a spore forming fungi. Spores germinate and attack the shafts of the hair and the surface layers of the skin. Exudate, from the damaged skin, mixes with debris from skin and hair and forms a crusty scab. Typically, the ringworm scab is gray and white and higher than the surrounding skin. Infection spreads from the center outwards and results in the circular lesion 1 to 2 inches in diameter. Adjacent lesions may overlap and create larger infected areas.

Ringworm can come back, so be sure to throw away your combs and brushes and buy new ones that won't spread the infection. Try to keep your skin clean and dry. Don't share hats, combs, or brushes. If you treat ringworm early, the hair in the bald spots will probably grow back. If you don't treat it, the bald spots could be permanent.
