Ringworm infections are often difficult to treat. Keeping the infected area clean and dry helps prevent growth and spread of fungus. Scraping of overgrown skin or nail tissue may be helpful, and various antifungal medications may be effective.

Ringworm of the nails is ... known as tinea unguium (pronounced tin-EE-uh UN-gwee-um). It usually starts at the tip of a toenail. The nail gradually becomes thicker and discolored. It may begin to die off and pull away from the nail bed. Infections of the fingernails are much less common.

Skin medication is usually successful at treating Ringworm within 4 weeks. If your ringworm infection is severe or resistant (meaning that it does not respond well to self-care), it will usually respond quickly to antifungal pills.
