Ringworm is usually diagnosed based on a medical history and physical examination. The lesions of ringworm are unique, and usually allow for a diagnosis simply on physical examination. In addition, your physician may order a culture or skin scraping of the lesion to confirm the diagnosis.

Ringworm treatment in horses is usually topical because systemic treatment is expensive and often of unproven efficacy. Shampoos and rinses are often used to wash the whole body, and antifungal creams and ointments can be of value on discrete lesions. Grooming equipment, rugs and saddlery should be disinfected and placed in direct sunlight regularly, and affected horses should be isolated until treatment if effective.

Ringworm is often diagnosed by the history and physical examination (and rapid response to treatment). The diagnosis can be confirmed by looking at skin scrapings under the microscope, where the fungus is visible. Also, ringworm lesions do not glow under ultraviolet light.

Ringworm of the scalp can ... develop into a kerion, a large, tender lesion over the area of the initial ringworm. This is caused by a hypersensitivity to the ringworm and may be associated with a rash elsewhere and tender lymph nodes in the neck.

Few animals exhibit itching with Ringworm infections, and uncomplicated skin lesions heal without scarring, and have little effect on general health. Animals with more severe generalised infections commonly have a loss of condition or develop secondary skin infections or fly irritation.

This patch is typical of the lesion seen in Ringworm. A diagnosis of this disease can not be made based just on the appearance of this lesion because other skin conditions (Demodex for example) can show similar lesions.
