He is well known for his comedy partnership with Adrian Edmondson and his over the top, energetic portrayal of characters. Conceived by Rik Mayall and Ben Elton as a natural successor to The Young Ones, Filthy, Rich & Catflap is a difficult series to describe. The words sublime and ridiculous do spring to mind, but the word that probably sums it up best is: funny. Filthy, Rich & Catflap is a tale of Richie Rich (Mayall), talentless and unheard of television personality along with Ralph Filthy (Nigel Planer), his useless, sponging agent and Eddie Catflap (Adrian Edmondson), his alcoholic minder, who are both involved in helping (hindering) Richie's quest for TV fame and glory.

Rising from the ashes of the legendary cult BBC series The Young Ones, comics Rik Mayall and Ade Edmonson return to television comedy with the hilarious follow-up series Bottom, arriving on DVD courtesy of BBC Video. Presented in 1.33:1 full-frame, the video as presented here is entirely acceptable considering that the majority of episodes were shot on video over a decade before this comprehensive release. Skin tones are even and pleasing, blacks are solid, and there is little evidence of pixilation or digital artifacting to be found. Likewise, the English Dolby Digital soundtrack (presented with closed captioning) offers a clear presentation of the original audio with little hiss or distortion of which to speak. While neither the audio nor video of this series was ever the selling point of this set, both are well presented, and the fact that the series made it to U.S. shores at all will certainly be more than enough for stateside fans of British humor. Though extra features may ... not be the driving factor behind the purchasing of this disc, the inclusion of some rare, early-career footage from Mayall and Edmonson is certainly a treat for stateside fans as well.

Mayall subsequently starred in Filthy Rich & Catflap (1986) with Edmondson and Nigel Planer; and Bottom (1991-92, 1995), again with Adrian Edmondson (in which the two of them played similar roles to those they played in The Young Ones). His first notable solo work was as Conservative MP Alan Beresford B'Stard in the sitcom The New Statesman (1987-92) for Yorkshire Television, thereby ... giving him a presence on ITV. He reprised the role in 2006 for the stage but this time as a Labour MP.
