A full-colour page advert in a newspaper costs around £1,800 per month, while Rightmove's customers pay a flat rate of between £195 to £250 per office per month, to advertise online. Among the group's 3,500 new home developer clients, it has attracted 19 of the top 20 in the country, and expects the biggest growth to come from that sector.

Rightmove revealed that average asking prices rose by only 0.2 pct, or 526 stg, in September to 214,566 stg. September's rise follows August's sharp 1.6 pct fall, which came on the back of seven consecutive monthly increases.

The surge in the asking prices was because of the increased southern demand, Rightmove said. In June, the group said that prices were up 0.8 percent taking the annual gain to 6.4 percent. "There are always fewer new instructions as we enter the summer months, but this year we have not seen a corresponding fall in the number of buyers. Consequently, sellers are asking for more and getting it, especially in the south," said Miles Shipside, commercial director of Rightmove. "The last month has seen the biggest rise in nearly five years, but it is skewed by the increases in the southern half of the country, particularly the South East where prices rocketed by over £12,000."

[T]he pace of house price rises over the last three months has fallen to a virtual standstill of 0.5pc, according to Rightmove, compared to 1.5pc in the previous three month period. Analysing price movements over a longer time period is often a more reliable indicator of underlying trends, Rightmove said.
