On December 31, 1985, while en route from Alabama to a New Year's Eve show in Dallas, a faulty heater caused Nelson's DC-3 to crash in a field near DeKalb, Texas. Except for the pilot, none of the passengers survived.

On New Year’s Eve in 1985 Ricky was on his way to a concert in Dallas, Texas when his plane crash and he died. The cause of the crash was never officially determined but it was believed to be caused by a defective cabin heater.
