Ricky Craven had a great race at the inaugural CMT 300, at his "home track" at NHIS. Ricky started 6th and after leading close to 100 laps, he took his #25 Budweiser Monte Carlo to a 5th place finish. Craven ... took his #8 Budweiser Busch series car to a third place finish in the CMT 100 Busch North Series race on Saturday. Ricky was the subject of a lot of talk around the track over the race weekend. People were trying to put to rest the rumors that Ricky would not be driving for Rick Hendrick in 1998, and that Budweiser would be pulling their sponsorship and sending it elsewhere for 1998. Ricky said his contract with Hendrick Motorsports is through the 1998 season, and he will be the driver for his current team through 1998.

Shortly after this brilliant start, Ricky Craven suffered a number of failures. His bad luck lasted roughly four years but he was soon able to enjoy more successes such as winning the Rookie of the Year Award at the Busch North Series. In 1991 he became the Busch North Series Champion, won two Busch Series races and debut at the Winston Cup. He decided to race the Busch Series full-time in 1992 and went on to win the Rookie of the Year award yet again. In subsequent years he finished as a runner up in the championship standings and soon had several Winston Cup team owners knocking at his door. In 1995 he teamed up with Larry Hendrick Motorsports and Kodiak for a sensational season.

Since he returned to racing full time last year, Craven's career hasn't suffered. Despite a car problem that sent him to the garage late in Sunday's Brickyard 400, Craven is 15th in the Winston Cup points race, four spots higher than his 1997 finish.
