In 1959 Richard Widmark's hand and footprints were cast in cement at Grauman's Chinese Theatre. Widmark starred in his own TV series in 1972, "Madigan", of which only six episodes were produced.
Before the movie is too far along, one hopes that Widmark's Town sheriff can beat the Old Testament condemned Duo, not because of any prejudice against their gender-gap-unification, but because of the smarmy, scummy nature of their seeming fascistic characters otherwise. For kids or naive' adults missing the point, except for the poor lighting (too soap opera Clear and sunny) and the directorial cluelessness, it is an enjoyable six-gun, quick draw feast. For those who have eaten of the Tree of Knowledge knowing of the original premise of the tale, it's fresh-faced; old west lead slinging is a bit spoiled by that burden/baggage.
Widmark is back as a tough nosed naval officer in charge of a strange weather station in Mongolia. When his men are all but lost, he makes a deal with a Mongolian chief (Murvyn Vye) to get them to the sea. Also starring Don Taylor. Excellent quality.
This is one of the better war films of the era, with solid performances by Richard Widmark and Reginald Gardiner. Though the battle scenes are noticeably bloodless, this film reinforces the notion that war is hell.
In retirement, Widmark rarely grants interviews. When he does speak to reporters, he is sure to mention that he hates most present-day movies, which, he says, are made mostly for teenaged boys.
