Richard Todd played for the Alabama under legendary coach Paul "Bear" Bryant. He was the 6th overall pick in the 1976 NFL Draft being chosen by the New York Jets in the 1st round. He quarterbacked New York from 1976 to 1983, and the New Orleans Saints in 1984 and 1985.

Richard Todd, independent candidate for Washington's 8th Congressional District, releases a statement calling for a new constitutional convention in Iraq. In the statement, Todd says US diplomacy must now come to the fore and help the Maliki government of Iraq, through a Constitutional convention, to fashion for Iraq a new document which provides for the Iraqi people what the US Constitution assures for each American citizen.

In 1981, he led the Walt Michaels coached Jets to their first winning record (10-5-1) since 1969 and a playoff birth. The next year, he led the Jets to the AFC Championship Game against the Miami Dolphins, but lost.
