Born Richard Andrew Palethorpe-Todd in Dublin, Ireland, his father Andrew William Palethorpe Todd was a British officer who gained three caps for Ireland at rugby before the First World War. He moved to Devon, England when very young and attended Shrewsbury School. During his early career, he acted in regional theatres, before co-founding the Dundee Repertory Theatre in 1939.

Born in Ireland, Todd spent a few of years of his childhood in India, before his family relocated to West Devon, England. A stage actor from 1938, he helped establish the Dundee Repertory Theatre the following year. During WWII, he spent six year’s serving with the King's Own Light Infantry and the 7th Parachute Regiment. After the war Todd began his film career, and one of his earliest roles came in The Hasty Heart (1949); his portrayal of a terminally ill soldier would earn him a Best Actor Academy Award nomination.

Richard Todd -current Born in Dublin on June 11, 1919, Richard Andrew Palethorpe-Todd spent a few of his childhood years in India, where his father served as an army physician. Richard actually trained for a potential military career at Sandhurst before inaugurating his acting training at the Italia Conta school. During his early career, he acted in regional theatres, before co-founding the Dundee Repertory Theatre in 1939. War ... was soon upon the country and he then served throughout during World War II, first as an officer in the Yorkshire Light Infantry, then as a paratrooper with the 6th Airborne.
