Richard Petty Driving Experience started its road tour in 1998 with a visit to New Hampshire International Speedway. The overwhelming success of this visit prompted the expansion of the tour to its current 15 tracks in 1999.

You wouldn't expect a dull experience from a racing camp bearing Richard Petty's name. This is, after all, the colorful seven-time winner of NASCAR's Championship series, aptly nicknamed the King. Today, petrol heads can climb into the cockpit and strap themselves in for 60 laps at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina. In addition to an adrenaline surge, you keep the open-faced helmet you raced in and the Nomex driving gloves you've probably sweated through. The event ... includes a private lunch with Petty.

The track is one of 25 nationwide raceways that operate the Richard Petty Driving Experience. Locally, it conducts drive and ride along programs for approximately 50 days a year at the California Speedway with corporate customers accounting for 60 percent of the participants and individuals accounting for the balance. Most corporate customers--who can put the pedal to the metal for about $400--tend to come from the Los Angeles area, but others come from Riverside County, San Bernardino County and even Las Vegas to ride on the only track in Southern California that hosts NASCAR races.
