Nixon was born in Yorba Linda, California on January 9, 1913, to Francis Nixon and Hannah Milhous. He was raised as an evangelical Quaker by his mother, who hoped he would become a Quaker missionary. His upbringing is said to have been marked by such conservative evangelical Quaker observances as refraining from drinking, dancing and swearing.

In his later years, Nixon gained appreciation as an elder statesman. He revisited China and traveled to the former Soviet Union. He died in New York City on April 22, 1994, and was buried in Yorba Linda, next to his wife, Pat, who had died in 1993.

Born in Yorba Linda, California in 1913, Nixon was the son of a Quaker grocery store owner. He attended Whittier College in California and went to law school at Duke University, as well as serving as a Navy officer during World War II.
