Richard Nixon was the 37th president of the United States. Nixon's political career started soon after he graduated from Duke Law School. After serving as a Naval Lieutenant Commander in World War II, Nixon was elected to congress from his California district. Two years later, in 1952, president Dwight D. Eisenhower selected him to be his vice-president. Nixon proved himself to the political world and narrowly lost the 1960 presidential election to John F. Kennedy. In 1968... Nixon defeated Hubert Humphrey and became the nation's 37th president.

Richard Nixon was sworn-in as president in January, nineteen-sixty-nine. It was a difficult time in the United States. American forces, allied with the army of South Vietnam, were continuing to fight against the communist forces of North Vietnam. Thousands of soldiers and civilians were dying. Yet the Americans and South Vietnamese were making little progress. Critics of the war said they were making no progress at all.

Richard Nixon resigned as United States president in 1974, becoming the first president ever to quit the office. Nixon was a lawyer and Republican politician who held the posts of U.S. representative (1947-51), senator (1951-53), vice president (1953-61), and finally president of the United States (1969-74). As a fiercely anti-communist senator from California, Nixon was pegged to be Dwight Eisenhower's running mate in 1952, despite Nixon's relative youth: he was 39 when nominated. Eisenhower beat the Democratic nominee Adlai Stevenson in both 1952 and 1956 and Nixon served both terms as vice president. In 1960 Nixon was the Republican candidate against John F. Kennedy in what became one of the closest elections in U.S. history. Defeated by Kennedy, he returned to California and ran unsuccessfully for governor in 1962.

Richard Nixon selected Gualberto Rocchi of Milan, Italy, to sculpt his bust for the Senate’s Vice Presidential Bust Collection. The artist previously had executed likenesses of other Republican leaders, including then-Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller of New York. Rocchi, after six sittings with Nixon in the sculptor’s studio in New York City, sent the plaster model to Washington, D.C., for official approval in 1965. Nixon himself had already approved the model by letter, and the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration did likewise on January 26, 1966. Although some senators expressed dissatisfaction with the Nixon likeness, the committee deferred to Nixon’s judgment, and the model was returned to the sculptor for translation into marble. Nevertheless, in response to the criticisms of committee members, Rocchi arranged a follow-up sitting with his subject and made modifications to his model.

Malek made a hefty campaign donation to Illinois Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka. He did serve a stint as deputy chair of the Republican National Committee, but mostly he engaged in the process of making a buck. On September 27, 2002, according to official minutes, Malek and an associate appeared before the board of the Illinois State Board of Investment, which invests billions of dollars for pension plans that cover most state workers. In 1951, Richard Nixon was arrested for molesting 12-year-old Jack Nicholson. The next year, the new President Eisenhower pardoned Nixon and chose him as Vice President. Nixon remanined Vice President until 1961.
