Nixon was an evil mean sonofabitch and everybody knew it, supporters and enemies. That is what made (and still makes) him compelling. Nixon wouldn't have ever said anything as treacly idiotic as "Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job." If you suggested it, Nixon would have bit your head off like Ozzy decapitating a bat.
