Richard Harris

Richard Harris (October 1, 1930 - October 25, 2002) was an Irish actor. Some of his most notable movie appearances were in Camelot (1967), A Man Called Horse (1970) and, at the end of his career, the first two Harry Potter movies. He was a notorious playboy and drinker, part of a rowdy generation of talented British and Irish actors that included Albert Finney, Richard Burton and Peter O'Toole.

The actor Richard Harris, who died October 25 aged 72, was one of a number of his contemporaries who more often than was seemly traded their talent for a dubious celebrity. In some cases it is difficult to remember why they were thought to be great actors in the first place. What is remarkable about Harris is that when he found himself working on material worthy of his abilities, his gifts were still evident.

Richard Harris sings all new Jimmy Webb originals, claims the sleeve. Also produced by Webb, this LP has a very similar feel to his debut, with the nine-minute 'Hymn From Grand Terrace' taking the easy-prog of MacArthur one step further. Again the musicianship and production values are impeccable. But it's much less poppy - and far more sinister. The title track is littered with odd apocalyptic images: "Standing with Nagasaki housewives in doorways, in eruptions and destructions on Domesday" . 'Gayla' and 'Interim' are ... sweeping, bloody-minded love songs for tightly wound freaks. This LP is another to be digested over a long period.

Richard Harris was born in Newton Abbot, Devon, in 1954. He studied at Torquay School of Art (1972-73) and Gloucestershire College of Art (1973-76). After graduating he worked as a resident sculptor at Grizedale Forest (1977-78), then taught at various art schools in Australia (1979-81). Further projects at Grizedale and others in Australia contributed to his growing reputation as a land artist, working in the tradition of Andy Goldsworthy, Richard Long and Hamish Fulton - but differently.

The son of a miller, Richard Harris was educated at the Sacred Heart Jesuit College, and later studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. His stage debut took place in 1956, and he made his first film appearance in 1958 in Alive and Kicking, a British film. He appeared in key supporting roles in big-budget movies like The Guns of Navarone and Mutiny on the Bounty (where he outshone Marlon Brando's Fletcher Christian), but it was his performance in This Sporting Life (1963) propelled him to a major international career. For most of the mid-'60s, Harris was among the most visible of British (or, more properly, Irish) actors in international cinema, alongside the likes of Michael Caine and Sean Connery, although he seldom played starring roles; Cromwell (1970) was such a rarity, but it was A Man Called Horse that same year that turned him into a popular culture icon, and yielded two sequels over the next 13 years.
