Richard Gere attended college on a gymnastics scholarship, studying philosophy and drama for three years before dropping out to pursue a career in acting. He started on stage with the Seattle Repertory Theatre and New York's Provincetown Playhouse. On Broadway, Gere understudied the lead in the original Broadway production of Grease (Barry Bostwick starred), and Gere took the lead when the play went to London.

Born in Philadelphia, Richard Gere showed his artist ability at a young age, by playing a number of instruments and writing music for high school productions. Gere won gymnastics scholarship to the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, where he was philosophy major. While at school, Gere caught the acting bug and left college after 2 years to pursue acting, landing a lead role of 'Danny Zuko' in the London production of the rock musical Grease in 1973. After spending full sessions with the Provincetown Playhouse and Seattle Repertory Theatre, he performed in a number of New York play' s, notably the title role in Richard Farina: Long Time Coming and Long Time Gone, in addition to two plays by Sam Shepard, Back Dog Beast Bait and Killer' s Head.

New Delhi - The Indian judiciary has transferred a judge who recently issued an arrest warrant against Hollywood star Richard Gere for kissing actor Shilpa Shetty at a public function in New Delhi, a newspaper reported Thursday. The Times of India reported that Dinesh Gupta, a magistrate in Jaipur city, was shifted to another court in the north-western state of Rajasthan after the country's legal luminaries slammed him for behaving like the Taliban moral police and seeking "cheap publicity."

Als Sohn des Versicherungsvertreters Homer George Gere und der Hausfrau Doris Anna Tiffany wurde Richard Gere in Philadelphia geboren und wuchs auf einer Farm bei Syracuse (New York) auf. Er hat drei Schwestern und einen Bruder. Gere lernte früh mehrere Instrumente (Klavier, Gitarre, Trompete) und komponierte für das Studententheater.
