Richard Dawkins: Evolution
built 214 days ago
oxford_rdawkins.jpg (22191 bytes) Amid this primordial soup of new paradigms, Richard Dawkins the ethologist rapidly mutated into an evolutionary biologist. In 1965, he hit upon an idea breathtakingly simple to understand but extraordinarily powerful in its implications. In essence, Dawkins argued for an ethology of the gene: How do genes communicate? How do genes behave differently in groups than they do as individuals? Why do genes cooperate? How do genes compete?
RD Richard Dawkins gave this lecture on Neo-Darwinism during a recent trip to the Galapagos. Q&A session is sort of blended into the second half of the lecture. A higher-resolution QuickTime version is available for download here. If you're curious, Richard's shirt says "Evolution: The greatest show on earth, the only game in town."
Richard Dawkins: Well, evolution is different about this, because there are a large number of evolutionists who are ... religious. You cannot be both [S]ane and well educated and disbelieve in evolution. The evidence is so strong that any sane, educated person has got to believe in evolution. and so obviously they all believe in evolution or they wouldn't have gotten where they have because they would be too stupid or too ignorant. So, it is a fact that there are evolutionists who are religious and there are religious people who are evolutionists.
A. E. Wilder-Smith is ... probably responsible for Richard Dawkins refusing to debate creationists any more. In 1986, Wilder-Smith and Edgar Andrews debated the two leading evolutionists in Britain, Richard Dawkins and John Maynard Smith, at Oxford – a lions’ den with the two strongest Darwinian lions in Europe. Yet even there, over a third – almost half – of the staunchly pro-evolution audience voted that the creation side had won the debate. The vote count became a contentious issue. There were claims of a cover-up by the Oxford Student Union. The AAAS was accused of lying about the vote count and didn’ [sic] correct it even when confronted (see article).
