A longtime member of the Screen Actors Guild, Crenna help lead a fight in the 1950s to ensure that actors receive residuals for their TV work. At the time of his death he was serving as a member of the SAG board of directors. Said fellow actor Sally Kirkland, "This was a man who worked. His humility was such an example to all actors."

Richard Crenna, who played Patrick Tyson in Sabrina died over the weekend aged 76. He had been suffering from pancreatic cancer. He was one of those character actors whose face popped up in lots of things both on TV and in films. He and Angie Dickinson were very funny in Sabrina as the parents of David Larrabee's fiancée.

Crenna has ... worked as a TV director. He began doing episodes of "The Real McCoys" during its last two seasons, helmed episodes of "Wendy and Me", "No Time for Sergeants" and "The Andy Griffith Show" later in the decade, and continued into the 70s and 80s with series pilots and installments of various forgettable sitcoms and the drama series, "Lou Grant". A member of the Director's Guild of America, he provided the narration for their commemorative film, "50 Years of Action!" (1986).
