Beem is one example of why Q-school remains as meaningful today as its first year in 1965. Guys like Beem are why some two dozen players will leave Orange County National next Monday with high hopes.

Born in Chicago, Beem grew up in Wisconsin where he was a high school state champion wrestler. After receiving his B.S. in chemical engineering from Iowa State University in 1979, he worked in refinery operations for Amoco Oil and in technical sales for Nalco Chemical. He received his J.D. with honors from the University of Houston in 1985, where he was elected to the Order of the Coif and served as an Editor of the Houston Law Review. He served two years in a judicial clerkship with the Honorable Edward S. Smith, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, Washington, D.C.

Rich Beem flew the grew on 18 yesterday and his ball ricocheted and hit Ian Baker Finch in the neck. Finch immediately plopped to the ground, but luckily he was OK. (More) This video is from earlier in the week when Beem had a birthday.

Beem hit driver and 4-iron to the first green, and the ball settled in the back right quadrant about 30 feet from the pin. When his first putt stopped rolling, though, Beem's ball was about half an inch from rolling off the putting surface.
Beem has a significant amount of lateral slide in his lower body during the downswing portion of his motion. This gives the club time to attack the ball from the inside, which is somewhat difficult to achieve with his long, upright backswing.

Staggering out of the pub, Beem and Duplantis climbed into their rental truck and, after an hour of trying to sober up, lost patience and decided to drive home. Unfortunately two of Ayr's finest had followed them out and duly pounced.
