Rich Beem: Tiger Woods
built 635 days ago
Woods has won the event for the past three years, but Beem is the man of the moment and is trying to win his third consecutive tournament. He is getting used to his new-found celebrity status after beating Woods by one stroke in a back-nine duel at the US PGA.

Last year was a break-out season for Beem, his fourth full year on the PGA Tour. His win at the PGA Championship by one-stroke over Tiger Woods was his first major title. He shared the lead through 36 holes with four other players and was three back of Justin Leonard playing in the final pairing on Sunday. With his closing round of 66 he became the first final-round, come-from-behind winner in a major since the 1999 British Open.
Beem shot a 4-under-par 68 yesterday, sharing the low round of the day on the beastly South Course with Dudley Hart. Beem didn't make a bogey and didn't miss a putt inside 10 feet on the same greens Woods moaned about. At 9-under, Beem is tied for third, four strokes off the lead.
Beem is ... comfortable in difficult conditions. He already has a major championship, after all, and he held off one Tiger Woods in the process. At the same time, Beem knows his name wouldn't be at the top of a list of pre-tournament contenders.
Beem will take extra satisfaction from seeing Woods finish as runner-up. Whereas Jack Nicklaus actually had more second places than victories in majors – an amazing statistic given that he won 18 – Tiger is supposed only to trade in victories.
Leading by a shot going into the par-4 14th, Beem hit his tee shot far right, behind a tree in the deep rough. Instead of hitting into the fairway and pitching up, he tried being Tigerlike and going for it. He wound up hitting into a bunker to the left of the green and settling for a bogey -- his first of the day -- that dropped him into a tie with Leonard.
