Rich Beem: Pga Tour
built 633 days ago
Beem, who overcame a double-bogey at the par-4 second hole with six birdies, is the surprise name atop the leaderboard, a player not really expected to win The Barclays, much less the FedEx Cup. But if this format is ever going to catch on, it must allow for underdogs such as Beem to have a shot at the $10 million annuity that goes to the winner at the end of this four-tournament competition.

Beem has withdrawn or been cut in seven of his last nine tournaments. He has been replaced in the field by Guy Boros, who has been playing on the Nationwide Tour this year. Monday qualifiers added to the field are; David Diaz, Harold Wallace, Richard Lee and Brock Mulder.

[A]gain, it wouldn’t be unheard of for Beem just to bestow a gift upon somebody for no big reason other than to brighten that person’s day. He knows he’s a privileged guy – he has more than $7.5 million in career earnings on Tour – and if can peel off a couple of crispy C-notes to help someone else not as fortunate, he’ll do it.

Beem is a guy who once quit the tour to go sell car stereos and cell phones. If his golf game doesn’t pick up, he may need to do that again. A career on the celebrity-appearance circuit doesn’t seem to be a good fit.

Harrington said that about six players had a chance to win the tournament, with Beem among them. Beem may not have the pedigree of some Tour players, but he just may have enough game and personality to pull the Riviera gallery to his side Sunday.
