Rich Beem: Pga Championship
built 635 days ago
Picture Three years ago Beem crossed the Atlantic to play in his first Open Championship at Carnoustie. Making the most of his trip to the `home of golf', Beem and caddie Steve Duplantis stopped off at Turnberry where, in some style, they acquainted themselves with the local brew.
Beem eventually found player dining in the months after Q-school, and drinks were on the house when he won the Kemper Open. He was one of three Q-school grads from the class of '98 who were PGA Tour winners the next season. The others were Carlos Franco, who won twice, and Mike Weir, who in five years went from Q-school to Masters champion.

[W]ere it not for the five-year exemption that came with the PGA title, Beem, who was 183rd on the money list last year, might be off the tour. This year was not looking much better. He is 136th on the money list coming into this tournament.

Beem, 37, has claimed three US PGA Tour titles while Pernice Jr has won twice. Wi, a seven-time winner on the Asian Tour, successfully retained his Tour card in America this season after a superb year that included three top-10s and four top-20s.

You remember Rich Beem, right? You don’t? Well, he won the 2002 PGA Championship and hasn’t really been heard from much since. Until Friday evening at the PGA of America Awards banquet down in Orlando, that is.

Beem is not the only player desperate for a good week. Weir, the former Masters champion and recent captain’s pick for the Presidents Cup, needs to finish in the top five to have a shot at moving into the top 70 in the standings and advance to the BMW Championship outside Chicago.
