Newer, second-generation anti-histamines have now become first-line therapy for people with allergic rhinitis. These prescription medication include cetirizine (Zyrtec®), fexofenadine (Allegra®), and desloratadine (Clarinex®). Loratadine (Claritin®, Alavert® and generic forms) is now available over the counter.
Allergic rhinitis (AR) is the most common allergic condition and one of the most common of all minor afflictions. It affects between 10-20% of all people in the United States, and is responsible for 2.5% of all doctor visits. Antihistamines and other drugs used to treat allergic rhinitis make up a significant fraction of both prescription and over-the-counter drug sales each year.

Although immunotherapy can benefit many people with allergic rhinitis, it is usually reserved for people who have a poor response to medication therapy. Immunotherapy is usually effective for people with allergies to cat dander and the pollen of trees, weeds, and grass.
Allergic rhinitis is a common condition that affects nearly 59 million people in the United States (nearly 20 percent of the population) with a market of nearly $4 billion. Allergic rhinitis is characterized by inflammation of the nasal membranes accompanied by symptoms that may include sneezing, nasal congestion, nasal itching and rhinorrhea.
