Nasal ipratropium (Atrovent nasal®) works to dry up nasal secretions, and is indicated at treating allergic rhinitis, non-allergic rhinitis and symptoms of the common cold. It works great at treating a drippy nose, but will not treat nasal itching or nasal congestion symptoms. Side effects are mild and typically include local nasal irritation and dryness.

Inflammation of the nasal mucous membrane is called rhinitis. The symptoms include sneezing and runny and/or itchy nose, caused by irritation and congestion in the nose. There are two types: allergic rhinitis and non-allergic rhinitis.

Non-allergic rhinitis can ... sometimes be caused by eating spicy food, or as a side-effect of certain medications, such as aspirin, or beta-blockers. It can also occur as a result of imbalances in the hormonal system caused by pregnancy, puberty, or an over-active thyroid gland.

If rhinitis is caused by non-allergic conditions, particularly if there are accompanying symptoms indicating a serious problem, the doctor should treat any underlying disorders. If rhinitis is caused by medications, such as decongestants, the patient may need to stop taking them or find alternatives.

The prevalence of allergic rhinitis is more closely tracked than non-allergic rhinitis, perhaps because the latter takes so many different forms. In general... allergic rhinitis and non-allergic rhinitis are thought to occur at fairly similar rates.4

Symptoms of non-allergic rhinitis may ... occur as a result of pregnancy, thyroid disorders or as a side effect of certain medications. When the symptoms are traced to a deficiency of thyroid hormone, thyroid medication can help.
