Rhinitis: Conditions
built 607 days ago
Rhinitis medicamentosa is treated by discontinuing the drug that is causing the condition. Steroid nasal sprays can speed the recovery from this condition, although recovery may take as long as one year [3].
The most common condition causing rhinitis is the common cold, an example of infectious rhinitis. Most infections are relatively short-lived, with symptoms improving at three to seven days. Colds can be caused by any one of more than 200 viruses. Children, particularly young children in school or day care centers, may have from eight to 12 colds each year. Fortunately, the frequency of colds lessens after immunity has been produced from exposure to many viruses.
A number of conditions can produce the same signs and symptoms as rhinitis. Some of these conditions are relatively rare. Structural conditions that may mimic rhinitis include deviated septum, nasal tumors, enlarged adenoids, and hypertrophic turbinates. Immunologic conditions include Wegener's granulomatosis, sarcoidosis, relapsing polychondritis, Sjögren's syndrome, and midline granuloma.

Although allergic rhinitis is not considered a serious condition, it nonetheless can interfere with many important aspects of life. A 2006 survey of nasal allergy sufferers reported that symptoms made patients feel tired (80%), miserable (65%), irritable (62%), and interfered with work performance (52%).
