Leukotriene modifiers — Release of substances called leukotrienes may contribute to the symptoms of allergic rhinitis. Drugs that inhibit the action of leukotrienes, called leukotriene modifiers, can be very useful in patients with asthma and allergic rhinitis. However, nasal steroids are more effective than leukotriene modifiers for treating allergic rhinitis; ... they are generally reserved for patients who cannot tolerate nasal sprays (due to nose bleeds) or azelastine (see "Antihistamines" above).
Controlling asthma may mean controlling allergic rhinitis in some patients, according to allergy and asthma experts. Allergic rhinitis affects up to 26 percent of Americans. The majority of asthma patients have rhinitis, and patients with rhinitis have a much higher prevalence of asthma than those who do not have rhinitis.
