The eastern branch is the first of three lines that make up TGV Rhine-Rhone. The TGV Rhine-Rhone is a major civil engineering project. The 140km route between Villers-les-Pots and Petit-Croix (near Dijon and Mulhouse respectively) requires 160 bridges, 12 viaducts, two new stations and one tunnel. 24 million m³ of earth will be removed. Two thirds of this will be needed for the embankment construction, and there will need to be 400km of fencing to protect the route.
Since the Rhine flows from the Alps, a precondition of its existence is the uplifting of the Alps, which began in the Alpine Orogeny. The stage was set in the Triassic Period of the Mesozoic Era, with the opening of the Tethys Sea between the Eurasian and African plates, between about 240 MBP and 220 MBP. The Mediterranean descends from this somewhat larger Tethys sea.

Rhine Ruhr has developed procedures covering it's entire operation from Sales and Marketing through to shipping and installation based on ISO9001. All activities are thoroughly reported and documented which enables compliance with the typically stringent quality engineering requirements of the industry. Every project is subject to design review at critical stages (including tender) and every fabricated item is trial assembled prior to dispatch (with photographic records). In addition, all gravity fed liquid distributors are flow tested prior to dispatch.
The North Rhine-Westphalia state election on May 22, 2005 granted the CDU a landslide victory. Their top candidate Jürgen Rüttgers built a new coalition government consisting of CDU and FDP that replaced the former government headed by Peer Steinbrück. Rüttgers was elected new Prime Minister (German: Ministerpräsident) of the federal state on June 22, 2005.

TGV Rhine-Rhone will enable massive reductions in journey times between major European cities in Germany, France, and Spain. The TGV Rhine-Rhone, like other TGV routes, will be operated by articulated sets capable of running at up to 320km/h (200mph). Any new trains for the route are likely to be built by French-based manufacturer Alstom.
Throughout the long history of Rome, the Rhine was considered the border between Gaul or the Celts and the Germanic peoples, although it should be noted that the historical ethnonyms do not carry their modern ethno-linguistic definitions. Typical of this point of view is a quote from Maurus Servius Honoratus, Commentary on the Aeneid of Vergil (On Book 8 Line 727):
