Rheumatoid Arthritis is chronic system inflammatory disease of undetermined etiology involving the articular structures of the multiple joints. The disease is often progressive and results in pain, stiffness, and swelling of joints. In late stages deformity and ankylosis develop. The cause of RA is unknown. The diagnosis is based routinely on the persistence of arthritic symptoms over time. The primary targets of inflammation are synovial membranes and articular structures.
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) can be one of the most disabling types of arthritis. It occurs worldwide, affecting more than 6.5 million people in the U.S. alone. It affects about 1% of people. The disease strikes women three times more often than men. Although it can occur at any age, the peak onset period is between the ages of 35 and 50. The disease may come on slowly or appear suddenly.

Rheumatoid Arthritis causes inflammation of the joint lining, called the synovium. This type of arthritis can cause pain, stiffness, swelling, warmth, and redness. The affected joint may ... lose its shape, resulting in loss of normal movement. RA can affect other parts of the body as well, including the blood, the lungs, and the heart. Rheumatoid Arthritis is 2 to 3 times more common in women than in men, and generally affects people between the ages of 20 and 50. However, young children can develop a form of RA called juvenile RA.

The report, Comparative Effectiveness of Drug Therapy for Rheumatoid Arthritis and Psoriatic Arthritis in Adults, was authored by the AHRQ-funded RTI International-University of North Carolina Evidence-based Practice Center in Chapel Hill, NC. It is the newest analysis from AHRQ's Effective Health Care Program. That program represents an important federal effort to compare alternative treatments for significant health conditions and make the findings public. The program is intended to help patients, doctors, nurses and others choose the most effective treatments. Information on the program, including full reports and plain-language summary guides, can be found at http://www.effectivehealthcare.ahrq.gov.
Two-year data from ASSURE (Abatacept Study of Safety in Use with other Rheumatoid Arthritis Therapies; Weinblatt, et al) will be presented on Sunday, November 12, 2006, Poster No. 509. According to the results, ORENCIA® (abatacept) plus background non-biologic therapies demonstrated a consistent safety profile through two years. At year one, the incidence rate for Serious Adverse Events (SAEs) per 100 patient years (n=957 patient years) was 18.8 and 491.4 for Adverse Events (AEs). At year two, the incidence rate for SAEs per 100 patient years (n=1292 patient years) was 18.6 and 362.8 for AEs. During the open-label period, most discontinuations were due to AEs (3.3 percent), withdrawal of consent (2.5 percent) and lack of efficacy (2.4 percent).
