Rheumatoid Arthritis: Patients
built 612 days ago
Rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic disorder characterized by female predominance. It is persistent, symmetric and may be associated with systemic features such as fatigue, weight loss and anemia. 70 - 80% of patients with rheumatoid arthritis are positive with rheumatoid factor (an antibody against IgM). Most patients ... have an elevated sedimentation rate.

Alternative and Complementary Therapies: Special diets, vitamin supplements, and other alternative approaches have been suggested for treating rheumatoid arthritis. Although many of these approaches may not be harmful in and of themselves, controlled scientific studies either have not been conducted on them or have found no definite benefit to these therapies. Some alternative or complementary approaches may help the patient cope or reduce some of the stress associated with living with a chronic illness. As with any therapy, patients should discuss the benefits and drawbacks with their doctors before beginning an alternative or new type of therapy. If the doctor feels the approach has value and will not be harmful, it can be incorporated into a patient's treatment plan. However, it is important not to neglect regular health care.

Rheumatoid factors are antibodies directed against the Fc fragment of IgG. These are usually IgM antibodies, but may be IgG or IgA. Rheumatoid factor is present in the serum of a majority of patients with rheumatoid arthritis, depending in part on what method is used. Latex beads coated with human IgG will be positive in 70% to 85% (and have significant numbers of false-positives). Sheep RBCs coated with rabbit IgG will be positive in 60% to 70% (and have fewer false-positives). Many rheumatic conditions and other chronic inflammatory processes ... may produce rheumatoid factors.

While RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS is selling some supplements, most is on dietary intervention. Has "Twenty one to thirty five percent of rheumatoid patients are allergic to some foods. Common food sensitivities are to wheat, milk and salicylate rich foods." Says a grand elimination diet should be followed initially to determine the presence of any food sensitivities. Common sensitivities are to wheat, milk, dairy products, eggs, potato, beef, crustacean and citrus. Also recommends avoiding all night shade foods or plants, eg.

In the clinical trial, 27 female patients, ranging in age from 29 to 50 years, with mild to moderately severe rheumatoid arthritis, were treated with AVR118 for a period of 90 days. These patients had previously been treated with other anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin. By day 90, all patients had either complete regression or significant decrease of joint swelling. Measurements of joint mobility showed improvement in all patients. All patients showed decreases in the level of the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) by day 90 of therapy and most patients showed decreases in the latex fixation test. There were no significant side effects of AVR118 observed in this study.
Patients with rheumatoid arthritis who are treated with low-dose of the steroid prednisone have an increased risk of coming down with pneumonia. Most other drugs used to treat arthritis don't have this drawback. Prednisone, a steroid, tends suppresses the immune system and at high enough doses this could increase the chances of infection. Even though prednisone is commonly used to treat arthritis patients, there have been no studies looking at it's effect on the risk of pneumonia -- which is one of the major causes of death in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The most common treatments for rheumatoid arthritis are methotrexate, prednisone, Remicade, hydroxychloroquine and Enbrel. There appears to be no significantly increased risk associated with so-called TNF-blockers -- Remicade, Enbrel or Humira -- or with methotrexate, hydroxychloroquine or sulfasalazine.
