Rhea: Rheas

The Ostrich of Namib and the Rhea of Patagonia are very similar birds. Both are very large birds and are about the size of man. The Ostrich lives in Africa and is found in Namib and the Rhea is found in Patagonia, the southern end of South America.

In Greek mythology, Rhea is the mother of the gods, daughter of Uranus and Gaia. She is married to her brother Cronus and is the mother of Demeter, Hades, Hera, Hestia, Poseidon and Zeus.

Most often Rhea's symbol is a pair of lions, the ones that pulled her celestial chariot and were seen often, rampant, one on either side of the gateways through the walls to many cities in the ancient world. The one at Mycenae is most characteristic, with the lions placed on either side of a pillar that symbolizes the goddess.

"Many studies are missing from the analyses of Rhea and colleagues. In the 2002 study, supposedly all English-language studies, including abstracts, published by 2000 and comparing one versus three sets/exercise programs were included. However, this is not the case. At least six studies published prior to 2000 that examined this topic are not included in their meta-analysis. Interestingly, none of these studies found any advantage in performing multiple sets."

Elementary students may color the Ostrich and Rhea bird templates included in this lesson. The teacher may ... find a story of birds to read to students. Additionally, you may want to role play an Ostrich and a Rhea after watching The Living Edens programs.

The Arcadians affirm that when Rhea 1 gave birth, before Zeus, to Poseidon, she declared to Cronos that she had given birth to a horse. Apparently Cronos had no reason to disbelieve his wife, for gods are capable of anything, and so Rhea 1, who had laid Poseidon in a flock of lambs to live with them, gave him a foal to swallow instead of the child. This account has been considered to be both foolish and wise, for wisdom at times appears as foolishness, being sometimes difficult to tell one from the other, specially when riddles and hidden meanings are suspected.
