Rez is the child of Tetsuya Mizuguchi. The father of Ulala and Space Channel 5, Mizuguchi announced the release Rez last year under the United Game Artists label. U.G.A.s first title for the PlayStation 2, Rez takes place in a future where computer network crimes have gone out of control. In order to take care of matters, a system called "Project-K" has been devised with an advanced artificial intelligence core named Eden.

Rez is a rail shooter in which the player takes control of an onscreen avatar traveling along a predetermined path through the computer network. The player cannot affect his or her movement in any way. The player targets foes by holding a "lock-on" button while moving an aiming reticule over up to 8 enemies. Once the "lock-on" button is released, the avatar fires shots that home in on each target. Failure to hit an enemy or projectile in time may cause a collision, which reduces the player's current evolution level by one and changes the avatar's form. The game is over if the avatar is hit while at its lowest possible level.

Splitting an assessment of Rez up into separate little headings is silly. That works for games whose different bits and pieces can be appreciated independently of each other, but the entire point of Rez is that it's all intgrated together. Gameplay is tied to graphics is tied to music is tied to sound effects is tied to the pulsings of the Dual Shock in your hand.

Now that Rez creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi is hopefully finished doing the umpteenth reiteration of Lumines, he's ready to do something different, something virtual, something Second Life. Miz has agreed to create a virtual Tokyo for the pc game, and so far he envisions his creation a "museum of Japanese culture." What's more, he adds:

Rez was recorded over the course of two years at Robertson's home studio, Crawlspace, and surprisingly, Hall never went into the sessions with prearranged solos. "I knew the chord changes really well," he explains, "but that was it. It was almost a little game I was playing with myself, like, 'Okay, nope, you're not workin' out nothin', you're gonna go in and you're gonna play it.' I really love that spontaneity thing, and I've always noticed as a session player that the more you labour on things, the worse it gets."

Parents have nothing to fear about Rez unless a pulsating avatar is something that may frighten you. Worth noting, though, is the [E]pilepsy warning that appears upon loading the game the game contains a mesh of intense color splashes and flashing at times. Enemies consist of all that look mechanical but some resemble aquatic creatures such as fish or insects. None of the music in Rez has explicit lyrics so naturally the ride is safe, at least aurally. Music game enthusiasts of titles such as PaRappa The Rapper and Space Channel 5 will want to experience Rez for its unique art direction and pumping music. Gamers who are afraid of rhythm games can approach Rez easily because it doesnt require that the player possess a good sense of rhythm or pacing at all.
