built 633 days ago
The Church of the Resurrection Theology Bursary has been set up by the Church of the Resurrection, Sudbury, to assist students of theology who have a vocation for pastoral leadership in the Anglican Church. Funds will be drawn from the interest on the endowment, and the value of the award will vary from year to year, depending on the interest available, the number of qualifying applicants, and the discretion of the administrators of the fund. Recipients must be Canadian citizens, Permanent Residents or Protected Persons who are enrolled in a provincially-assisted postsecondary programme and who meet provincial residency requirements as set out in the Ontario Student Assistance Program’s 2005-06 Student Eligibility and Financial Need Manual. Awards will be made to students who have demonstrated financial need and are in good academic standing. Special consideration will be given to students who are from the deanery in which Sudbury is located; or, failing that, who are from the Diocese of Algoma; or, failing that, are from a diocese of the Council of the North.

The Greek word translated in Hebrews 6:2 as “resurrection” is anastasis 386: “1) a raising up, rising (e.g. from a seat) 2) a rising from the dead 2a) that of Christ 2b) that of all men at the end of this present age 2c) the resurrection of certain ones history who were restored to life (Heb. 11:35)” (The Online Bible).

While scholars generally agree that the resurrection is at the center of Christianity and has application to other doctrines, at least two major issues cause widespread disagreement. (1) Was the resurrection an actual event of history? If not, did it still occur, perhaps in other than a strictly space–time manner?

All in all, Perrin's book does a good job of pointing out differences between the synoptic gospels and their treatment of the resurrection. The analysis of the significance of those differences rests on some assumptions/conclusions that prove to be unpersuasive. And much data -- such as Paul's letters and the Gospel of John -- are sacrificed to the further detriment of the enterprise. Still, the price is right and informed speculation can be helpful in trying to sort out the gospels and the resurrection. Just recognize the limitations of this particular analysis.
McFague's discourse on resurrection takes up this claim of embodied knowledge in her view of resurrection's inclusivity, making it a worldly reality rather than an other-worldly reality. Her interpretation is in keeping with an understanding of the gospel "as a destabilizing, inclusive, nonhierarchical vision of fulfillment for all of creation."(14)
Resurrection is likewise the basis for the spiritual reportrayal of the Exodus story, bringing mankind out of the land of slavery into the promised land. Christ's coming out of the grave can be seen to correspond to Moses and his people coming out of Egypt, wherein the resurrection becomes the liberating exodus of salvation history.
