The approval of Requip for moderate-to-severe primary Restless Legs Syndrome is supported by data from four double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials in adults diagnosed with RLS. Patients with RLS secondary to other conditions (e.g. iron deficiency, pregnancy and renal failure) were excluded from the study groups. "One of the principal benefits of treatment with Requip is relief of the urge to move the legs," said Dr. William Ondo, Associate Professor of Neurology at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas. "Requip targets what doctors believe may be an underlying cause of the disorder, which is dysfunction of a system involving the brain chemical dopamine. Now there is an approved treatment specifically for moderate-to-severe primary RLS which should help to validate this under-recognized and misunderstood condition."
Although no cure exists for Restless Legs Syndrome, different types of treatment can be used to manage the condition and relieve discomfort. If your symptoms are mild, self-help may be sufficient treatment. For those with severe RLS, where the disorder disrupts sleep or daily activities, medications may be the proper treatment approach. Lastly, if your Restless Legs Syndrome is caused by an underlying condition, your doctor can treat that condition. Treatment of the underlying condition often cures the RLS.

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a neurologic movement disorder that causes sudden jerking motions in the legs, especially at bedtime. The involuntary jerking can cause insomnia in the sufferer and it often disturbs the sleep of spouses and partners. RLS may ... involve the arms. The disorder affects 12 million Americans and is most commonly found in middle-aged women, pregnant women and people with severe kidney disease, nerve disorders or rheumatoid arthritis.
People with Restless Legs Syndrome can experience their symptoms very differently. It can ... be difficult for patients to describe their symptoms. Many people with Restless Legs Syndrome feel a strong, irresistible urge to move their legs whenever they sit or lie down. They may also have uncomfortable sensations in their legs, often described as creeping, crawling, tingling, or pulling.
Restless Legs Syndrome can further limit a person’s daytime activities by interfering with the amount of time a person can travel by car, airplane or any other type of transportation where sitting for a prolonged period of time is required. Restless Legs Syndrome may ... put a damper on such things as movies or concerts or limit participation in business meetings. The sleep loss and disturbance of daytime activities may lead to feelings of anxiety and depression.
Actigraphy uses a small wristwatch-like device (such as Actiwatch) to monitor sleep quality in people with suspected restless legs syndrome (RLS), periodic leg movement disorder (PLMD), insomnia, sleep apnea, and other sleep-related conditions. Patients can wear the device on their wrists or ankles. It measures and records muscle movements during sleep. For example, with PLMD, actigraphy can provide information on the total duration of movements, the number of occurrences, whether PLMD occurs simultaneously in both legs, and its effects on sleep.
