Requip: Doctors
built 630 days ago
Requip is a category C FDA pregnancy medicine. Therefore, a treatment with this product during pregnancy could harm a growing fetus (it could cause severe birth defects). Therefore, if you are pregnant you should ask your personal doctor if it is safe to start taking this medicine. It has not been determined whether this drug’s components can pass into the patient’s breast milk flow. If you are nursing an infant, you should ask your personal health care provider if it is safe (both for you and for the nursing infant) to start a treatment with Requip. It has been established that taking this medicine affects the patient’s breast milk production.

The approval of Requip for moderate-to-severe primary Restless Legs Syndrome is supported by data from four double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials in adults diagnosed with RLS. Patients with RLS secondary to other conditions (e.g. iron deficiency, pregnancy and renal failure) were excluded from the study groups. "One of the principal benefits of treatment with Requip is relief of the urge to move the legs," said Dr. William Ondo, Associate Professor of Neurology at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas. "Requip targets what doctors believe may be an underlying cause of the disorder, which is dysfunction of a system involving the brain chemical dopamine. Now there is an approved treatment specifically for moderate-to-severe primary RLS which should help to validate this under-recognized and misunderstood condition."
Requip is indicated for the treatment of the signs and symptoms of idiopathic Parkinson's disease and is generally well tolerated in this population. In placebo-controlled studies for early treatment in this patient population on monotherapy, the most commonly reported side effects for Requip versus placebo were nausea (60 vs. 22 percent), dizziness (40 vs. 22 percent) and somnolence (40 vs. 6 percent). Patients are advised to talk to their doctor about whether they have the potential to develop the sedating effects associated with Requip, which include somnolence, and the possibility of falling asleep while engaged in activities of daily living, including operation of a motor vehicle. Fainting or low blood pressure may occur during initial treatment or with an increase in dose. Hallucinations may occur at anytime during treatment. Requip may potentiate the side effects of L-dopa and may cause and/or exacerbate pre-existing dyskinesias.

Requip can be taken with or without food. Taking the medicine with food may help prevent nausea, which is a common side effect of Requip. It may take several weeks or months of using this medicine before your symptoms improve. For best results, keep using the medication as directed. Do not stop taking Requip suddenly or change your doses, or you could have unpleasant withdrawal symptoms such as fever, muscle stiffness, and confusion. Talk to your doctor about how to avoid withdrawal symptoms when stopping the medication.

Requip can make your blood pressure dangerously low. You need to have a really good feel for what your pressure is before starting this drug. A daily history, NOT just a reading in the doctors office when you are nervous and get a reading that is higher.
