Repton is a bit of an institution. It's been around since the 1980s and it's to Acorn what Sonic is to Sega. It's the game where you must guide your reptilian friend around complicated labyrinths whilst solving puzzles, avoiding creatures and collecting jewels: it's like Boulder Dash for really clever people. And really patient people.

Repton was the leading British landscape designer of his day and published some marvellous books with overlays which fetch a pretty penny nowadays. He is listed in Hazlitt's "Roll of Honour" [a list of British book collectors]. Repton lived in a cottage and treated the garden as the foreground to a Picturesque view of the village of Hare Street. There was even an Irregular woodland on the hill in the background. The Landscape Style ... formed the basis of Repton's extensive practice. He was most unfortunate in that the prime years of his professional career, between the publication of his first book in 1793 and the collapse of his health in 1815, coincided with the Napoleonic Wars. The number and geographical extent of his commissions was extraordinary for a country involved in a major European war but the scope of the works his clients wished to have executed was modest by peacetime standards. Repton was highly skilled in the design of forests, parks and lakes but in most cases his clients did little more than enrich the foreground of an existing scene with a garden.

Repton's requirements in Repton 2 are onerous: Repton must not only collect all diamonds (including those held in safes and behind cages), but ... collect all earth, kill all the monsters, collect all puzzle pieces and use all transporters. Once these substantial tasks have been completed, Repton must then negotiate the roof of the entire length of the final screen, avoiding meteors falling from the sky in order to collect the completion piece and thus complete the game. This part is particularly tricky, since the meteors fall from the sky in a random fashion, making it difficult for the gamer to guide Repton to safety. This long list of requirements, coupled with the fact that the game must be completed in one attempt, is unique among the Repton series and makes Repton 2 by far the hardest Repton game to successfully complete. To add to the inevitable frustration suffered by anyone attempting this, a bug in the original version of Repton 2 meant that the game contained one diamond less than the stipulated number needed to complete the game. This means that successful completion of these versions is, in fact, impossible.

H[U]mphrey Repton was born at Bury St. Edmunds. His father was Collector of Taxes and the family intended that he should become one of the prosperous Norwich merchants whose trade was primarily with Holland. He married very young and engaged in several enterprises, all of which were failures. He spent five years studying, Hadfield states, "the beauties of nature, gardening, botany, entomology and other gentlemanly sciences: he made drawings of many of the old country seats in the neighborhood." After a short interlude as confidential secretary to the Lord Lieutenant in Ireland he took to gardening again, back in Essex, England where he started a business which again failed. One night after much worrying he decided to become a landscape gardener and the successor of "capability" Brown.
