Remicade (infliximab) is a chimeric monoclonal antibody that targets and binds to tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-a). TNF-a is a key factor in regulating the inflammation in RA. By inactivating TNF-a, the inflammatory process is significantly diminished from the start.

Remicade (infliximab) is a biologic response modifier, specifically a monoclonal antibody which binds to and blocks tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha). Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) alpha is a cytokine involved in the inflammatory process.
Remicade infusion contains the active ingredient infliximab, which is a type of medicine called a monoclonal antibody. It works by suppressing part of the immune system and modifying the process of inflammation.

Remicade (generic name infliximab) works by blocking a chemical in the immune system that over-stimulates inflammation. This chemical, called tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), is found in the skin of people with psoriasis and in the joints of people with certain types of arthritis.

Remicade (infliximab) is a chimeric IgG1k monoclonal antibody. Infliximab neutralizes the biological activity of TNFa by binding with high affinity to the soluble and transmembrane forms of TNFa and inhibits binding of TNFa with its receptors. Biological activities attributed to TNFa include: induction of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukins 1 and 6, enhancement of leukocyte migration by increasing endothelial layer permeability and expression of adhesion molecules by endothelial cells and leukocytes, activation of neutrophil and eosinophil functional activity, induction of acute phase reactants and other liver proteins, as well as tissue degrading enzymes produced by synoviocytes and/or chondrocytes.
