Remicade, manufactured by Centocor, is an injectable drug used to alleviate symptoms of numerous diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn’s disease. A recent Mayo Clinic study found that Remicade users are three times more likely to develop certain types of cancer and two times more likely to contract a serious infection than a non-user.
Why the butterfly?  People living with Lupus  often have a rash on their face called a malar rash.  Commonly called a 'butterfly' rash, it  appears across the nose and cheeks, in the shape of a butterfly's wings.  You will find a  different butterfly on each page, representing how different Lupus is for each person. If neurologic symptoms appear in a patient taking Enbrel or Remicade, the drug should be discontinued immediately, the researchers advise in a recent issue of Arthritis & Rheumatism. The patient should be referred to a neurologist for a thorough examination, they say.

Bad Med Johnson & Johnson's Centocor Inc. unit hid the side effects of its Remicade drug and must pay a woman with lupus symptoms $19.4 million, a Texas jury decided Wednesday. Patricia Hamilton, 47, began taking Remicade for her Crohn's disease in December 2001 and developed drug-induced lupus the following year, she said in her lawsuit. The drug ... left her with increased risk of liver failure, said her attorney.

Remicade (infliximab)—a drug approved by the FDA in 1998 to relieve the often-debilitating symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis—has been linked to serious skin problems. Evidence of Remicade and skin problems first surfaced in April 2005, when Dutch researchers reported their clinical findings in the medical journal Arthritis Research and Therapy.
Humira was manufactured by Abbott Laboratories while Remicade was manufactured by Centocor. Neither drug manufacturer is ready to accept the results of the Mayo Clinic study, claiming the research is flawed. The manufacturers ... claim that even with the possibility of side effects, the drugs still have a favorable "benefits-to-risks ratio."
