Comparative Religion is a Humanities department of the College of Arts and Science at Miami University. The Department consists of nine full-time faculty and approximately fifty students majoring or minoring in the program. Beyond those, more than 700 students enroll in classes offered by the department each semester.
Early science such as geometry and astronomy was connected to the divine for most medieval scholars. The compass in this 13th century manuscript is a symbol of God's act of creation. Religious traditions fall into super-groups in comparative religion, arranged by historical origin and mutual influence. Abrahamic religions originate in the Middle East, Indian religions in India and Far Eastern religions in East Asia. Another group with supra-regional influence are African diasporic religions, which have their origins in Central and West Africa.
Minor concentrations are available in Comparative Religion, Bible, World Religions and Judaic Studies. A minor consists of five courses approved by the department, one of which must be at or above the 300 level. Rel 102, though not required, is strongly recommended. For the minor in Judaic Studies, see Jonathan Brumberg-Kraus.
