Relenza: Flu
built 614 days ago
The main difference between Relenza and the annual flu shot doctors urge you to take is prevention. Doctors will tell you that a flu shot is the best way to prevent getting the flu - although it's not an absolute guarantee that you won't get it. Relenza is a flu treatment. Doctors say it's not a substitute for the flu shot.

Relenza is inhaled via a device similar to an asthma "puffer". Taken twice daily for five days, Relenza quickly achieves high concentrations of medication in the lungs, particularly on the surface of the respiratory tract where the virus replicates. Being able to switch off viral replication early on, when the flu virus is at its peak, not only shortens the duration of the flu, but ... gets people back to normal functioning much sooner.

Relenza has not been tested in people with medical conditions severe enough for possible hospitalization. Use it with caution if you have any kind of serious health problem in addition to the flu.
TORONTO, ON -- December 15, 1999 -- In the midst of what health experts are calling a particularly virulent flu season, Relenza(TM) (zanamivir), the first inhaled antiviral medication for treating the flu, is now available in pharmacies across the country. Relenza was granted Health Canada approval on November 2, 1999, after receiving a fast-track review.

The Food and Drug Administration has advised Roche Holding AG and GlaxoSmithKline Plc to put warnings on the two most common drugs used to treat the flu, Tamiflu and Relenza. The drugs in question may cause psychiatric side effects.
Relenza, as a neuraminidase inhibitor, treat the cause of influenza infection by inhibiting the critical neuraminidase protein on the surface of the virus. Talk with your physician in about Relenza to learn how neuraminidase inhibitors work to significantly reduce the duration of the flu.
