Relenza: Drugs

Officials from GlaxoSmithKline, the maker of Relenza, and Tamiflu manufacturer Roche AG said they opposed label changes and cited data showing no causal link between the drugs and adverse events. It is “very difficult to differentiate drug from disease,” Dr. Jonathan Solsky of Roche told the panel.

Relenza costs about $50 for a five day prescription. It's not covered by any provincial drug plan. Some of the provinces told Marketplace they won't cover it because they share Michael Elashoff's conclusion that the drug is not an effective treatment.

Relenza doesn't penetrate the central nervous system easily and hasn't caused problems with recurrent use, suggesting that the virus, not the drug, is responsible for most cases of abnormal behavior seen among users, the FDA staff said. Because they couldn't rule out any additional impact from the drug, they said a warning was warranted.

There may be other drugs that can interact with Relenza. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start using a new medication without telling your doctor.

There is no known interaction between Relenza and other medicines but use caution if you are using inhaler based medication. Relenza is a prescription medication and can be easily purchased from drugstores and online pharmacies. Relenza is not a substitute for influenza vaccine. You should continue to get your annual flu shot. Always remember that prevention and good personal hygiene is better than cure.

Unfortunately, Relenza is not suitable to be taken orally, so GSK devised its administration using a complex inhalation system. The discovery of Tamiflu (taken orally) led to the rapid decline of use of Relenza and GSK stopped marketing the drug, so though still available its market share is small.
