Relationships are connections of two or more people that are an important source of emotional support and comfort in most people’s lives. Whether they are romantic, familial or professional in nature, relationships enhance a person’s sense of belonging, purpose and self-worth.

Relationships begin with so much hope and possibility. Many people describe feeling "transformed" and "awakened" in this early stage. But beyond that, people dream of a relationship that will last an eternity and bring deep meaning to their life, perhaps even filling in what felt like "the missing piece."

[T]hrough the relationships people make they learn about the interests, issues or enthusiasms that have brought them together. For example, an informal educator may encourage a group to take part in an ‘adventure weekend’. As part of that experience the worker may invite them to try canoeing. Because of the relationship they have with the educator, the group is willing to try new activities. The worker may ... encourage them to reflect upon the experience and to gain new understandings. Second, a significant part of the learning will be about the experience of relationships themselves.

[M]any people bring baggage from previous relationships into new relationships. If you have been hurt in a previous relationship that does not mean your new partner is going to hurt you. By constantly being suspicious and mistrusting your partner can lead you to driving your partner away. The person you are with now is not the same person as you were with before. Try to put yourself in your partner's shoes. If you were a trustworthy person and being honest in the relationship how would it make you feel if your partner constantly accused you of lying, questioned you all the time about where you were or who with, accused you of cheating etc.

Despite the toll hearing loss takes on relationships, nearly half (44%) of adults with hearing problems say that they have not sought treatment. Moreover, only 20% of those who suffer from hearing loss claim to be familiar with the many treatment options available for hearing loss. "It's a tragedy that people don't take action for their hearing health when so many treatment options are available," said Dr. Pat Chute, audiologist, professor and chair, Division of Health Professions, Mercy College. "Hearing solutions exist for all types of hearing loss, including therapies such as cochlear implants, Baha or hearing aids."

Some relationships seem more important than others at times, but importance can change and is neither constant nor absolute. Living life is like trying to figure out an analogy (such as this one). You try to think of different ways in which the things in the analogy are connected, and map parts of them to each other. While you think, different common aspects of the things seem more or less important. You live your life and meet and grow closer to or farther from numerous people. Eventually you find some configuration that makes the analogy make sense.
