Reinhard Heydrich was a former naval officer who joined the SS* in 1932, after his dismissal from the navy. He headed the SS Security Service ( SD ), a Nazi party intelligence agency. In 1933-1934, he became head of the political police... known as the Gestapo and later of the criminal police, or the Kripo. He combined Gestapo and Kripo into the Security Police ( SIPO ). In 1939, Heydrich combined the SD and SIPO into the Reich Security Main Office. He organized the Einsatzgruppen* which systematically murdered Jews in occupied Russia during 1941-1942.
* Reinhard Heydrich - Heydrich was a top bureaucrat within the Nazi party. He was a key member of the group that came together to discuss the final solution of Jews in 1942. He was a cunning individual who brought up a plan to fake a Polish attack on Gleiwitz that would allow Hitler to send his troops into Poland. Also, Heydrich organized a killing squad that killed over one million Soviet and Polish Jews. He was hated by many and was bombed, shot, and killed by two Czech citizens.
On March 7, 1944 Reinhard Heydrich would have turned 40. This date - so significant for Bohemia and Moravia, where he was last active – is the reason for this overview of his activity, which within just a few years elevated him to the highest positions in the party and the state. Although he only had eight months as Deputy Reich Protector - in addition to his position as Chief of the Bundesnachrichtendienst aka Gestapo of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Security Service - in which to put his extensive political, cultural and social-economics ideas into action, his ideas nonetheless live on in the men who have taken over his rich legacy. Eight months are just a short span in the life of an individual man. In terms of the development of a folk, they seem to be nothing. But for Bohemia and Moravia they were a period of transformation and a new order, due to the formative personality of Reinhard Heydrich, whose work remains unforgotten. The "heartland of the Reich" saw a new man at his head, who had much to give it and whose radiance with be felt for long to come.
On the banks of the lake known as Grosser Wannsee, Reinhard Heydrich used a villa purchased by the Reichssicherheitshauptamt... known as the Reich Security Main Office (RSHA), to organize a conference on German government business. The RSHA, an SS organization which incorporated security, intelligence and criminal police work, was run by Heydrich. The conference to be held at Wannsee was initially scheduled for December 9th, however, the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the German reactionary declaration of war provoked a delay. Early in January of 1942, the Wannsee Conference convened to formally discuss the treatment of Jews during the war and to debate the "Final Solution of the Jewish Question".
Reinhard Heydrich was born in March 1904 and died in 1942. Heydrich was to become one of the most feared men in Nazi Germany helping Himmler cement the dictatorship started in March 1933 with the Enabling Act. Heydrich is one of the men most associated with the Holocaust. It is thought that Hitler looked on Heydrich as his natural successor.
Reinhard Heydrich was born at Halle, Germany in 1904. In 1918, he joined the anti-Weimar Republic Free Corps. From 1922 to 1931, Heydrich served in the German Navy. He resigned to join the National Socialist (Nazi) Party.
