Reggaeton lyrics have always been a topic of debate. When Reggaeton was considered “underground”, its lyrics depicted a bad image to women and influenced the use of drugs and sex. Many people considered the genre of bad taste. Reggaeton was headed in a direction of being banned in Puerto Rico. As the 1990s came to an end, Reggaeton took a swift turn for the better. As new reggaeton artists came along, they began to “clean” up the lyrics to ensure reggaeton would be played on the radio.

Reggaeton is a Puerto Rican based style of beats which was actually originated in Panama (El General). The beat then evolved from there and it is now cosidered a favorite music by Boricuas. The beat itself is simple and follows the following pattern: A A B...or Tap Tap Bass. Though most of the lyrics which modern-day reggaeton artist use sexist and repetative, some artists use it for love songs and to express how they feel about a special woman aka ]mami chula].

Reggaeton has the same beat and all songs sound exactly the same (awful). The lyrics are horrible and are derogatory to women. Reggaetons dress like gangsters, but they're not -- they're just no-talent losers.

Reggaeton competes with Salsa in terms of sales, but the two will continue to borrow elements from each other as the style develops. Spanish-language rap has increased in popularity because of Reggaeton. Reggaeton's danceability and an increase in the use of English lyrics and rap will help crossover to mainstream. The lyrics are sometimes political, but it's the sex and party aspects of Reggaeton that excite dancers.

Reggaeton lyrical structure resembles hip-hop lyrics. Like hip-hop, most reggaeton artists recite their lyrics rap-fashion rather than sing it melodically. Unlike hip-hop music... a significant percent of reggaeton artists are also singers, may blend rapping and singing, and may also have a "street" image, similar to Akon. Like hip-hop music, reggaeton songs have hooks that are repeated throughout the song.
