built 628 days ago
Regal Cinema is one of the oldest cinemas in the world, it is located in Mumbai, India. Regal was built during the cinema boom of the '30s during which Plaza Central, New Empire, Broadway, Eros and Metro Cinemas opened. Opened in 1933, Regal was designed by Charles Stevens, the son of the famous 19th century architect, F. W. Stevens. Its interiors with extensive mirror-work were designed by Czech artist, Karl Schara. The main auditorium had a motif of sunrays in pale orange and jade green. Its interiors were designed to create an impression of airiness, coolness and size in harmony with the modern simplicity of the exteriors.

The Regal Cinema site has recently been the scene of other conflicts with construction unions. The theater's topping off ceremony was unceremoniously canceled by management on June 18 when Ledcor Industries, Inc., the Canadian construction company in charge of the project, refused to let members of Iron Workers Local 118 place the traditional American flag, Christmas tree and union banner atop the structure. Regal Cinema embarked on an aggressive expansion throughout the decade, swallowing up smaller chains as well as building new, more modern multiplexes. Its largest acquisition during this original period was the 1998 combination of it and Act III Theatres, although it had acquired some smaller chains as well, including the original Cobb theatres and RC Theatres.

The Regal Cinema project has been heavily subsidized by millions of dollars in property taxes from the City of Reno. The large amounts of local tax money given to private corporations has caused local unions to raise questions over wages and benefits paid to both union and non-union workers.
