EWTN - July 18, 2001 - A high-ranking Lutheran priest in Paris has announced his conversion to Catholicism, in what may be the first of its kind since the 16th century Reformation. Michel Viot, 57, was a Lutheran ecclesiastical inspector, an office that would be the equivalent of bishop in other churches. He told the Catholic newspaper, La Croix, that the joint declaration on justification signed by the Catholic and Lutheran churches in 1999 was the linchpin of his conversion. "In order that the world believes, it is necessary that Christians are united," Viot said. http://www.harpazo.net/news.html
Martin Luther recognised the power of printing to mobilise grass roots support for Reformation. Luther wrote prolifically – more than 400 titles, including commentaries, sermons and pamphlets that attacked Catholic superstitions and abuses and which promoted Biblical doctrines. In the first three critical years after Luther posted his 95 Theses in Wittenberg, from 1517 to 1520, Luther published 30 pamphlets and flooded Germany with 400 000 copies. By 1523, half of all the printed works in Germany were Luther’s works.
Reformed teaching was introduced to Scotland by John Knox, who was initially influenced by the Lutheran stream of the Reformation. His teacher, Patrick Hamilton, was burned to death for his faith, and Knox himself was captured by the French and forced into hard labor as a galley slave. Once freed, he studied with Calvin in Geneva, returning to Scotland in 1559. In spite of stiff opposition from both church and state, Knox succeeded in establishing what came to be known as the Presbyterian Church.

Map of the Religious Division of Europe in the Late 16th Century (Modern History Sourcebook) In 1517, Martin Luther attacked the Church for calling for a Reformation that would restore Christianity to its purist form. Luther’s act led to a schism in Christianity with the followers of Luther separating from Christians who continued to follow the Pope and the Papal States. At first, Luther thought Jews would convert to Lutheranism, but by 1543 he realized this would not happen and unleashed harsh vituperations against Jews.
