Reflexology

Reflexology is a healing art of ancient origin. Although its origins are not well documented, there are reliefs on the walls of a Sixth Dynasty Egyptian tomb (c. 2450 B.C.) that depict two seated men receiving massage on their hands and feet. From Egypt, the practice may have entered the Western world during the conquests of the Roman Empire. The concepts of reflexology have ... been traced to pre-dynastic China (possibly as early as 3000 B.C.) and to ancient Indian medicine. The Inca civilization may have subscribed to the theories of reflexology and passed on the practice of this treatment to the Native Americans in the territories that eventually entered the United States.

Reflexology is a natural science and art used to promote overall health and well being. It is a simple and noninvasive healing modality requiring no drugs, medications or special equipment. Reflexology is based on the principle that the feet, hands and ears are microcosms (mini-maps) of all systems of the body. Specific manual pressure to any of the microcosms stimulates the corresponding part (reflex) of the body as well as the nervous system. Focused stimulation of the reflexes helps release stagnant toxins, thereby reducing stress on the body. This in turn helps improve circulation, restore energy flow and vitality to all systems of the body and promote internal balance.
While historically Reflexology has anecdotally been found to have a positive affect on the body suffering from a wide variety of chronic problems, it is not a panacea for all ills. Reflexology is not a substitute for medical treatment, but can be used as a complement to any type of medical approach or therapy. Reflexology can ... be incorporated into an overall healthy lifestyle which includes attention to diet, moderate exercise, and different forms of stress reduction and relaxation.
Reflexology has many benefits. It feels good. It is pleasant and soothing, and it relaxes the body. Each person responds to a reflexology in a unique way and on occasions may experience a variety of short term reactions, for example, extreme relaxation, tiredness, lethargy or tearfulness. Reflexology is not a ‘cure-all’. However, it does help releive pain associated with migraine, sinus problems, breathing disorders, digestive problems, circulatory problems, back problems, tension and stress.

Reflexology has become a popular alternative therapy in the UK during recent years. It has been around for 4000 years and was first used in the middle and eastern continents and was introduced to the Western world during the early 1900's. It is based on the theory that reflex areas on the feet and hands are linked to organs and other areas of the body within the same zone.
Reflexology relieves stress and tension, improves blood supply and promotes the unblocking of nerve impulses, and helps nature achieve balance within the body. The human body is an amazing machine when everything is working in perfect order, the balance being maintained through a system of glands, organs, nerves, chemicals, etc. Let one of these components get out of balance and the effect is felt throughout the entire body system.
