Reel Big Fish: Bands
built 633 days ago
Hailing from Orange County, California, Reel Big Fish made for a "skankin" good time at The Rave last Friday night. Playing third wave ska for over 14 years now (and hopefully another 14) they danced and dug their heels deep into the Rave's stage. Their homage to ska is true, but the evolution of the genre lands squarely on their colorful beats. The fans will continue to get the same hilarious, long ass shows while the band clearly takes pleasure in the special delivery. They've found a style that totally fits them and the fans have flocked to the party. They dont try to evolve into what other people want.

An engaging, scruffy collection of musical misfits, the ethos of seven-piece Reel Big Fish is immediately apparent from their punning name and rampaging, good-time ska music. The band was formed in Huntington Beach, California, USA, in the early 90s by Aaron Barrett (b. 30 August 1974; guitar, vocals), Matt Wong (b. 12 January 1974; bass), Andrew Gonzales (b. 1 November 1973; drums), and Ben Guzman (vocals). They performed mainly cover versions of rock-based hits, until Guzman, then the lead singer, introduced his bandmates to ska.

Reel Big Fish was one of the legions of Southern California ska-punk bands to edge into the mainstream following the commercial success of No Doubt and Sublime. Like most of their peers, the band was distinguished by their hyperkinetic stage shows, juvenile humor, ironic covers of new wave pop songs, and metallic shards of ska. The group cultivated an underground following that broke into the mainstream in summer 1997, when their single "Sell Out" became a modern rock radio and MTV favorite. Based in Huntington Beach, CA, Reel Big Fish was originally a trio comprised of vocalist/guitarist Aaron Barrett, bassist Matt Wong, and drummer Andrew Gonzales. At that stage, the group was a conventional rock band with pop-metal leanings that covered both classic rock and Top 40 songs -- it was music designed for frat parties. After several months, the band discovered ska and decided to add horn players.

Reel Big Fish released their first studio album since leaving Jive Records; Monkeys for Nothin' and the Chimps For Free worldwide on July 10, 2007, on the Rock Ridge Music record label. On June 26, 2007 shortly before its release the band announced in a Myspace blog that Matt Wong was leaving the band to spend more time with his wife and newborn child. He was replaced by Derek Gibbs who played bass in Jeffries Fan Club and Aaron Barrett's now defunct side project, The Forces Of Evil. Since Matt Wong was very popular with fans, some are skeptical of the new bassist's ability but the band has stated that Derek is "Matt Wong Approved" and fans have nothing to worry about.
