Red Hot Chili Peppers are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California in 1983. For most of their career, the group's lineup has consisted of vocalist Anthony Kiedis, guitarist John Frusciante, bassist Michael "Flea" Balzary, and drummer Chad Smith. The band's varied musical style has fused traditional rock with various elements of funk, punk rock, alternative rock, rap, heavy metal, and psychedelic rock. They hold the record for the most number one singles on the Billboard Modern Rock Chart, with eleven, and a record of 81 weeks at #1 on the chart.<sup class="reference">[2]</sup> They have sold over 61 million albums worldwide, and were ranked #30 in VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.

[U]nder their new name, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, with Flea back on board, the group acquired a speculative recording contract with EMI Records America. Unfortunately, as Irons and Slovak were under contract with their new band, their debut album had to be recorded by Kiedis and Balzary with Jack Sherman on guitar and Cliff Martinez (ex-Captain Beefheart, Weirdos) on drums. Production was handled, somewhat surprisingly, by the Gang Of Four's Andy Gill.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers emerged from the '80s California punk and hip-hop scenes. They combine the funkiness and syncopated lyrical delivery of hip-hop with punked-out guitars and hyper stage antics. The Chili Peppers were profoundly affected by the heroin-overdose death of guitarist Hillel Slovak in 1988. Soon afterward, they scored a number of hits with their albums Mother's Milk (1989) and Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991). Despite the multiple reorganizations of the band with guitarists John Frusciante and Dave Navarro, they have stayed remarkably relevant in comparison to their peers, enjoying a renaissance in 1999 with Californication.

In 1988, Red Hot Chili Peppers released the "Abbey Road EP," featuring a pastiche of the famous Beatles album pose on the cover (the band were totally naked save for socks covering their genitalia). However, the mood was darkened when Slovak took an accidental heroin overdose and died in June. Deeply upset, Irons left, while the band recruited John Frusciante for guitar and Chad Smith for drums.
