Red Buttons

Red Buttons was born lucky. He was born on the lower east side of Manhattan in that miracle square mile that gave show business Fanny Brice, Eddie Cantor, George Burns, Jimmy Durante, George Gershwin, to name a few.

In later life Red was to recall of his city streets upbringing: "You either grew up to be a judge or you went to the electric chair." He attended Evander Childs High School in the Bronx and, aged 12, won a talent contest at a local theatre for his rendition of Sweet Jennie Lee.

Buttons was married to actress Roxanne Arlen in 1947, but it soon ended in divorce. His next marriage was to Helayne McNorton, from December 8, 1949 until 1963. His last marriage was to Alicia Prats, which lasted from January 27, 1964 until her death in March 2001. Buttons had two children, daughter Amy Buttons Norgress and son Adam Buttons. He was the advertising spokesman for the Century Village, Florida retirement community.

Here are some potential disappointments to look out for: The pretty red buttons aren't labeled with text, and the touch-sensitive buttons can get annoying when they lead you into a menu you can't get out of. And despite the VX8500's widely touted music posture, it doesn't have a speakerphone. Speaking of music, you can download tracks to both your PC and phone via Verizon for only US$1.99, but it costs $30 to take complete advantage of the music functionality with the Essential Music Kit. The kit provides a USB sync cable, a proprietary stereo headset for listening to music and making phone calls, and software. Last among the list of so-so qualities is the phone's limited 62 MB of internal memory for music, but you can remedy that with a microSD card.

Didn't Red Buttons hijack an episode of "The Gary Schandling Show"? he told Biblical jokes (Noah's Ark, etc)... and the fact that he told such jokes on Gary Schandling's show was so odd and off-beat, it was killer.

[FN 1: The complaint alleges the statement in the issue was that "Red Buttons thought the Ted Danson roasting of Goldberg at the Roast was funny or a "scream." " The quotation in the text, above, appears in the videotape supplied by the defendants.]
